I’m saddened to inform you that we will not be having a Comic Creators for Freedom fundraising drive this January 11th for National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.
For the past three years, over 100 comic book artists have come together for this important cause, raising $22,000! This is something I love spearheading and a cause that is very dear to my heart.
The reason for the cancellation is due to being unable to gather donations the way we have in the past. Since I made this announcement to the members of the CCF, several great suggestions have come to light and it looks like we might be implement one for International Abolition Day later this year.
I’ll still be advocating National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, of course, and, if you make a donation to an organization who is a part of this fight on January 11th and forward me your receipt, I’ll send you one of the Dreamer short stories back as a Thank You for helping out in this important cause!
A few of my favorites are Love 146 (International), Gracehaven (Ohio), and GEMS (New York City).

I know we’re working on a Les Mis theme, but I’m totally hearing the voice of Hugo Weaving (who would have been awesome as Javert, don’t you dare tell me otherwise) as the executioner, which led to…..

Not Hugo: “Look, just renounce these colonist ideals, even if you don’t really mean it, and make them an offer. That’s all they really want.”
Nathan: *smiling” “Thank you…..but I think I’d rather hang behind the wood sheds.”
God, I love that movie…..it’s like Les Mis run through Alan Moore’s acid soaked brain.

everyone is giving him such grief because he’s not as good as the others or as good as the stage actors from the musical- but he wasn’t that bad!
“Stars” and “Javert’s suicide” got me emotional
*and then there’s the problem of the die-hard musical fans who call the whole movie “crap” just cause it’s not the original actors
(which Not true– the girl who plays eponine was Eponine in the 10th & 25th anniversary stage version -and she made an umbelivable amazing eponine in the movie*
She was my favorite. Totally owns that role.
But yeah, I’ve been a Les Mis fan for several years, since my friend Jen showed me the 25th. But people, like always, get too hung up on the differences between film versions, etc. Newsflash: THE MUSICAL is an adaptation. Want to be a REAL die hard Les Mis fan? Read the book and then come talk to me. :P
People just need to relax and enjoy things for what they are, in this case, a movie with a stellar cast, great music, and laughably lousy CGI, but who cares since the rest of it was good (I tend to care little for CGI unless it’s ridiculously cutting edge like LOTR was, and the Hobbit is. lol).
I do have to say Adam Lambert proved to me even more that while he has a wonderful voice, he’s not very bright, with his Les Mis review: “They should have sweetened the voices in the studio.” Oh hey, maybe your voice isn’t as good as I thought, if you’re suggesting something so atrocious. I like raw, real voices. And that was the whole POINT of singing live on the film.
No offense meant to any Glamberts out there. I was just flummoxed that anyone could miss the blaring fact that it wasn’t studio-recorded to make it better.
I don’t hate him, I just thought his singing was a little off, but that he is mainly great (though still not as great as I imagine Hugo Weaving would have been)
Well Hugo Weaving is like the Chuck Norris of Australian Actors so of course he would trump any and all others…

You know Elrond was actually my first Hugo Weaving role to watch? I didn’t watch Matrix or anything until some time after the fact, so my first impression of him WAS Elrond. I was a fan for life after that.

And I agree…Hugo would have been a bada** Javert….though I have yet to see Russell’s, so I don’t know if he was good or bad.
My opinion? Great performance and okay singing, whereas Hugo would have been great performance and fantastic singing

What exactly happened?
The problem pertained to the way that we collect money so that the government doesn’t see it as taxable income for me personally—which it is not.
The way we previously did it is no longer possible without an EIN number which requires setting up a 501(c) which I’m not ready (or financially able) to do.
So there was no way around it for this January. We currently have two solid leads on how to do it down the road, but there isn’t time to organize the whole thing by January 11th.

I don’t have a problem with him personally. In fact, I think he’s a fantastic actor and a wonderful singer. My best friend and I use watched a movie together when we were little, and then we wrote a book together where he was the creepy villain. So, I suppose it isn’t the actor himself who I don’t like, but the character my friend and I made who looks like him. When I see him, I suppose I just think of that character, haha

On a less related note…There’s a group in the Dallas area that helps victims of human trafficking…which is apparently terrible here, though it’s kept pretty well hidden from the public eye…as well as to immigrants in distress, refugees, and victims of home violence. This group is called Mosaic Family Services. I went through the whole process of getting a background check to be cleared to volunteer in their shelter (which you don’t get to learn the location of until you’ve gone through training and gotten the “all clear”), but then my life kind of blew up, and I never got the chance to donate my time. I just wanted to add them to your list of groups that could use some donations on National Human Trafficking Awareness Day (or any time of year really).

Sorry that the Comic Creator’s Alliance isn’t happening this year, but totally understand that establishing a 501c3 takes a lot of time (took us several years for RWP).
I was totally going to have Gabe draw Gerty into it this year.
However, I’ll find another way to help support the cause!
