New Page #18!

A guard arrives to take Nathan Hale away

Howdy Doody Time? Clobbering Time? Could you be more specific?

I’ll be at Ohayocon in Columbus, Ohio January 18th – 20th! Come find me in Artists Alley!

I’m saddened to inform you that we will not be having a Comic Creators for Freedom fundraising drive this January 11th for National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.

For the past three years, over 100 comic book artists have come together for this important cause, raising $22,000! This is something I love spearheading and a cause that is very dear to my heart.

The reason for the cancellation is due to being unable to gather donations the way we have in the past.  Since I made this announcement to the members of the CCF, several great suggestions have come to light and it looks like we might be implement one for International Abolition Day later this year.

I’ll still be advocating National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, of course, and, if you make a donation to an organization who is a part of this fight on January 11th and forward me your receipt, I’ll send you one of the Dreamer short stories back as a Thank You for helping out in this important cause!

A few of my favorites are Love 146 (International), Gracehaven (Ohio), and GEMS (New York City).

Meep! Only word I have. MEEP!

Oh, that and, nice Screenshot. lol

The VI: Oy Vey. No likey the whole hand-tied thing. But I thinks I see a face I knows!!!

Wait, what? No fundraiser? WHY!??!HOW!??! This is important stuff. What went wrong?

  2. Amber says:

Bea! oh Gracious Bea! Oh dear oh dear.
Boy I just become more hysterical with each update.
    VI: Is that Montresor?

    • Caera says:

      I tought a taw a Montresor…

Yes I’ve officially lost it you guys. I’m regressing into my five year old self that first met Nathan in my brother’s history book.

  3. In keeping with the Les Mis theme…

“Do you hear the fan girls scream?
    Screaming the name of Nathan Hale;
as we all wait with baited bre-ath for the next update to come.

“Bea will try to save him still,
But we all know how hist’ry goes,
Our dearest Nathan won’t survive until next Wednesday.”

    • Caera says:

      *explodes from awesome*

    • Brent says:

*dies a little, cries a little, smiles a little lottle*

    • M says:

*keeps up with les mis theme cause I just saw the movie and it was AWESOME and Enjolras reminded me of Nathan and it gave me FEEELINGS*

      There’s a grief that can’t be spoken.
There’s a pain goes on and on.
      Empty chairs at empty tables
Now my friends are dead and gone.

      Here they talked of revolution.
Here it was they lit the flame.
      Here they sang about `tomorrow’
      And tomorrow never came.

From the table in the corner
They could see a world reborn
And they rose with voices ringing
      I can hear them now!
The very words that they had sung
      Became their last communion
On the lonely barricade at dawn.

      Phantom faces at the window.
      Phantom shadows on the floor.
      Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will meet no more.

Oh my friends, my friends, don’t ask me
      What your sacrifice was for
      Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will meet no more

now if you excuse, I got THE FEELS again cause NATHAN! NOOO it’s NOT Fair!

      • Amber says:

Stop. I beg you stop. I have expended all my kleenexes.
That song ALWAYS makes me cry and put to Nathan….
        *sobs in pillow*

      • Melissa says:

“Red -my world is set on fire! Black, my soul when he’s not here. Red, the color of desire! Black, the color of despair!”

I’m gonna go cry now that empty chairs and empty tables is stuck in my head.

  4. Brent says:

I know we’re working on a Les Mis theme, but I’m totally hearing the voice of Hugo Weaving (who would have been awesome as Javert, don’t you dare tell me otherwise) as the executioner, which led to…..

    Nathan: “I’m ready…”
Not Hugo: “Look, just renounce these colonist ideals, even if you don’t really mean it, and make them an offer. That’s all they really want.”
Nathan: *smiling” “Thank you…..but I think I’d rather hang behind the wood sheds.”

God, I love that movie…’s like Les Mis run through Alan Moore’s acid soaked brain.

Soldier: “Now if you’ll come through here, you’ll be fitted for your rope, shoes, and death tattoo.”
    Nathan: “…..Death tattoo?”
Soldier: “Oh, absolutely. All of our rebel scum must look butch to keep the lady folk interested. May I suggest the hummingbird? He has a certain ‘gentle yet driven’ quality which I believe fits you quite well.”

    • Alex says:

Hugo weaving as javert YES YES YES THISSSSSS!

*and my sympathies to poor Russell crowe who surely tried very hard and wasnt THAT bad and yet everyone hated his javert*

      • Caera says:

        *I* didn’t hate his Javert. ;)

        • M says:

          I didn’t Either!

everyone is giving him such grief because he’s not as good as the others or as good as the stage actors from the musical- but he wasn’t that bad!

“Stars” and “Javert’s suicide” got me emotional

*and then there’s the problem of the die-hard musical fans who call the whole movie “crap” just cause it’s not the original actors
(which Not true– the girl who plays eponine was Eponine in the 10th & 25th anniversary stage version -and she made an umbelivable amazing eponine in the movie*

          • Caera says:

She was my favorite. Totally owns that role.

But yeah, I’ve been a Les Mis fan for several years, since my friend Jen showed me the 25th. But people, like always, get too hung up on the differences between film versions, etc. Newsflash: THE MUSICAL is an adaptation. Want to be a REAL die hard Les Mis fan? Read the book and then come talk to me. :P

People just need to relax and enjoy things for what they are, in this case, a movie with a stellar cast, great music, and laughably lousy CGI, but who cares since the rest of it was good (I tend to care little for CGI unless it’s ridiculously cutting edge like LOTR was, and the Hobbit is. lol).

I do have to say Adam Lambert proved to me even more that while he has a wonderful voice, he’s not very bright, with his Les Mis review: “They should have sweetened the voices in the studio.” Oh hey, maybe your voice isn’t as good as I thought, if you’re suggesting something so atrocious. I like raw, real voices. And that was the whole POINT of singing live on the film.

No offense meant to any Glamberts out there. I was just flummoxed that anyone could miss the blaring fact that it wasn’t studio-recorded to make it better.

        • Brent says:

I don’t hate him, I just thought his singing was a little off, but that he is mainly great (though still not as great as I imagine Hugo Weaving would have been)

          • Caera says:

Well Hugo Weaving is like the Chuck Norris of Australian Actors so of course he would trump any and all others…

          • Brent says:

Elrond doesn’t solve your problems. He just stares at you until your problems go away.

          • Caera says:

You know Elrond was actually my first Hugo Weaving role to watch? I didn’t watch Matrix or anything until some time after the fact, so my first impression of him WAS Elrond. I was a fan for life after that.

    • Julie says:

LOVE the V for Vendetta reference!!

And I agree…Hugo would have been a bada** Javert….though I have yet to see Russell’s, so I don’t know if he was good or bad.

      • Brent says:

My opinion? Great performance and okay singing, whereas Hugo would have been great performance and fantastic singing

  5. Alex says:

I DONT understand—- what did you do that you cant now?!?

I mean its your art not fan art so that’s not the problem right?

    What exactly happened?

    • Lora says:

The problem pertained to the way that we collect money so that the government doesn’t see it as taxable income for me personally—which it is not.

The way we previously did it is no longer possible without an EIN number which requires setting up a 501(c) which I’m not ready (or financially able) to do.

So there was no way around it for this January. We currently have two solid leads on how to do it down the road, but there isn’t time to organize the whole thing by January 11th.

  6. Alex says:

Also curse you folks and your les mis references¡! That Movie ripped my heart and stepped on it
And you guys Connect it to Nathan’s inpending…. Just…
You Had to Add Salt to the Wound and MAKE IT HURT EVEN MORE WHY DONT YOU?!?!!!

    *huggles nathan*

And speaking of les mis – who do you all think the actor who plays enjolras fit more as? Nathan or Alan?

    Enquiring minds wanna know

    • Brent says:

Honestly? Little bit of Nathan with a dash of Knowlton thrown in. Though I’m more advocating Eddie Redmayne when it comes to actually playing Nathan….

      • NOOOOO!!! I can’t stand Eddie Redmayne!! To even SUGGEST him as Nathan…..ewwww

        • Alex says:

          That’s kind of rude.
The person was talking about enjolras- the blonde ABC rebels leader actor (who i dont know the name know off) not eddie redmayne

Also there is nothing wrong with eddie redmayne- so the “ewwww” comment comes out as childish and snobbish

          • I don’t have a problem with him personally. In fact, I think he’s a fantastic actor and a wonderful singer. My best friend and I use watched a movie together when we were little, and then we wrote a book together where he was the creepy villain. So, I suppose it isn’t the actor himself who I don’t like, but the character my friend and I made who looks like him. When I see him, I suppose I just think of that character, haha

          • Caera says:

The creepy villain!?!?! LOL I must read this!!!! I cannot imagine him….

          • Yep–and Tom Hiddleston was the gallant hero :)

          • Caera says:

That I can imagine. The Sexy–I mean–Tom Hiddleston rocks.

(Yes I officially call him The Sexy)

          • Half Moon says:

Caera…So Tom Hiddleston is the TARDIS to your Doctor?

          • Caera says:

I see where you’re going with that but the TARDIS to my Doctor is actually Adam Young. Hiddles is my friend Jen’s TARDIS to her Doctor. lol

And Nathan’s the fixed point in time we have to break…

          • Half Moon says:

hahaha!!!! Could you see our version of The Wedding of River Song if we broke the fixed point??????

  7. Celidah says:

    *sobs pre-emptively* I CAN’T TAKE IT

Sorry to hear the drive is not going to come together this year. ‘Tis a sad day indeed.

  8. Julie says:

On a less related note…There’s a group in the Dallas area that helps victims of human trafficking…which is apparently terrible here, though it’s kept pretty well hidden from the public eye…as well as to immigrants in distress, refugees, and victims of home violence. This group is called Mosaic Family Services. I went through the whole process of getting a background check to be cleared to volunteer in their shelter (which you don’t get to learn the location of until you’ve gone through training and gotten the “all clear”), but then my life kind of blew up, and I never got the chance to donate my time. I just wanted to add them to your list of groups that could use some donations on National Human Trafficking Awareness Day (or any time of year really).

  9. Melissa says:

Sniffles…. Nathan!! Why hasn’t someone rescued him by now? My inner fan girl is dying, especially with the les miserables references…. oh, and the fourth panel? :'(

  10. trevor says:

Sorry that the Comic Creator’s Alliance isn’t happening this year, but totally understand that establishing a 501c3 takes a lot of time (took us several years for RWP).

I was totally going to have Gabe draw Gerty into it this year.

However, I’ll find another way to help support the cause!

  11. Becks says:

OMG Guys… Between the Les Mis references and everything with Nathan plus being sick and a crappy day at work… I think I’m just gonna go hide in my bed now with a big box of tissues and my dog… Hopefully my landlord can ignore the sobs coming from my apartment….
Also bummed about the cancellation of the CCA drive…But it’s totally understandable. Will definitely have to look into donating on my own!

  12. Katie Swinford says:

    My feels!!! Nathan!!!

  13. Tamesin says:

Don’t worry, everyone – nothing can happen to Nathan until my release form gets to Lora. And since it disappeared in the mail once already… (Pray harder, Nathan! Maybe it’ll fall in a puddle.)

  14. Jazzie says:

I can’t tell whether to start crying over this or to start doing a mixture of happy dancing&crying over the Les Mis references

  15. Half Moon says:

……I just threw up a little looking at the first two panels.

  16. Trickster says:

Why yes I’m fine. Only Nathan is in great danger and it invokes Billy Budd and you keep referencing Les Mis and the dreaded January 16th nearing when I shall die of Castiel feels.

    *screaming internally*

    • Caera says:

A fellow Melville fan? Billy Budd was a life changing read in 11th grade. And I read Moby Dick on a movie set of all places. lol THAT was AWESOME. <3
