Several of you have sent me links about this. So I thought I’d share it with everyone. A British 22 gun warship, the H.M.S. Ontario, was found at the bottom of Lake Ontario! It sank during the American Revolution, in 1780. When I first caught word of this, I got really excited–thinking about the artifacts that would be recovered from it. I got starry-eyed as I began daydreaming about the potential traveling exhibit, much like the Titanic one that’s been all around the country (and quite worth your time if you haven’t seen it yet). However, because there were 90 British soldiers on board when it sank, and 30 American prisoners, it’s considered a “War Grave” and won’t be excavated. The ship is technically owned by the British government, and they want it left alone.
I guess I get that… Except that MY Revolutionary War Grandpa’s grave is being dug up to make a CITY PARK and I… I just can’t find him. And no one who might know where they moved him will return my phone calls. If you can mess with a grave to put in a bench and a shade tree, excavating a sunken ship to gather historical artifacts sounds reasonable.
But… clearly I’m angry about something unrelated. ;) This was a cool discovery!
