For some odd reason, that costume looks very appropriate on Bea, I wonder why… hehe.
So glad this is back to updating.
Looking forward to seeing you at C2E2 as well, that convention is going to be awesome.

I KNEW IT.
and hey…i love 1776. it’s one of my favorite musicals, after thoroughly modern millie and fiddler on the roof, of course.

Hehe, I don’t think it helps that I’ve seen 1776 performed at the high school I went to in Kansas =P
Also, the preview did in fact make me chuckle… hahaha XD
And that’s awesome that you’ll be doing a panel there! Have fun! :D

Is anyone else annoyed at how -bored- Cato looks these past few pages? I understand that he may feel a bit out of place and whatnot, but for someone who is into her and all, well…he doesn’t seem to care one way or another here.
And yes, the dress is very pretty. However pink in this style is a real hit or miss. It would be ten times more lovely if it was in green or blue!

Ah! I love 1776!! It’s one of my favorite plays/movies! Is that Martha Jefferson’s dress then?
I love Uncle Herc. He cracks me up. XD

Nice. Although I HAVE to admit that I LOL’ed at the irony of her dress.
Great update, looking forward to next week! <3

I agree with Mandy, Cato does look quite bored. Granted my boyfriend isn’t as in to costumes as I am, but he usually tries to pretend to be interested when I drag him fabric shopping. However Cato is young, so maybe he just hasn’t learned that trick yet ;)

Ooh! It’s shiny. I wonder who they’ll go as, my votes for John and Abigale Adams, they have some of the most romantic and honest love letters I’ve ever read.

D: Poor Bea, now she’s even more confused! Excellent dress, though. She’s probably thinking ‘the hoops aren’t right on this, though!’ Or maybe that’s just me …
Congrats on getting on the panel!

wow. are thoose sequins on that dress? if it is than that’s why she should have that shocked expression on her face. :)
and by the way, i love uncle hercules. he reminds me alot of my friend Terrence, but Terrence isn’t as huge and alot less intense. they would be best friends.

I love this update! The dress is so pretty, I like the way the pink looks with Bea’s hair. I want an epic dress like that…Oh my god, Uncle Hercules is totally Terrance! The vote incentive is hilarious as well, I can just imagine Bea putting all the facts straight about the people back then ;)
on 05 Feb 2010 at 7:34 am 17.Sarah said …
1776 shout-out :D! Awesome. Although I’m not sure pink sequins are period-appropriate–Uncle Hercules must be taking dramatic license:)

Ah, Bea, such a charmed life. XD Uncle Herc is frickin funny as hell. He’s got personality as big as his stature. Speaking of stature, loved the Voting Incentive. Ben can’t fill them big shoes!! It does make me appreciate when GW showed up in the Dreamer. We going to see GW again in the future? (yikes, total derail)

Three words: I KNEW IT. I called that there was going to be a 1776 moment THREE issues ago! YES. lol. Epic win. Awesome pages as usual! lol I love the sparkles on the dress. Can’t wait until next week.

I’m glad that Hercules is getting rave reviews, because we’ll be seeing a lot more of him!
@Rae: *high-five* for voting every day! Sometimes those panels are recorded and posted online. If that happens, I’ll of course link to it!
@Mandy @Christina: You’re totally right, but in Ben’s defense, Alan didn’t even step foot inside the dress shop. Talk about bored, this guy might be napping: http://thedreamercomic.com/comic.php?id=207 Keep reading, I hope you enjoy this scene as it plays out!
@Jen: Yes it is!
@Raven: Those were my thoughts exactly. Last time I was in Chicago for a Comic Con, I went to that same panel, also featuring Gail Simone, and stood around like an idiot afterward to have my picture taken with her. I am the only webcomics person on that panel so far, so hopefully though I’m inexperienced, I’ll have something to add to the conversation.
@Natalie: They totally do, but somehow I think that would be lost on Bea and Ben. ;) Even though Bea did get to meet Mr. Adams!
@Erin: I’ve met me, and I think I’d rather go to Thailand. ;) Enjoy your trip!!
@Eibhlann @Sarah: Those are sequins. An army of them. I wanted the dress to look like a costume (which has to be overdone in order to read at the back of the theater) and not like a real 18th century gown. It’s definitely a modern ‘inspired’ gown, meant for hopping and dancing.
@Albone: Of course we’ll see General Washington again. …He’s coming, he’s coming, he’s coming….
@Katie M: You were right! :D

*snerk* Ha! He said “Martha” and the first thing I thought of was 1776. I love that show. William Daniels will always be John Adams to me. : )
Poor Bea, she looks a bit freaked out with that dress. It’s ok Bea. Embrace 1776. Embrace Alan. I want to see some embracing of Alan. ; )

I actually like how bored Ben looks. I think he is also actually kinda pretending that as a blalance for Bea and Herc both going totally over the top with EMOTHSIONSSS!!! You know, he must be feeling like the only sane person. :D
Yeah, fun pages! And I also appreciate how this gown looks like costume, not like an actual historical dress. Has a nice sparkly contrast with the ones Bea actually wore in “real” 18th century. This was the first thing I thought when I saw that.

Fantastic news! I’ll be at C2E2 with Reading with Pictures, as well as at a small press booth with some local Chicago creators. We’ll have to hang out!

@Fleece: LOL! Yes, on page 3 panel 1, Ben is definitely trying to balance out the group, because Bea has clearly gone bye-bye.
@Trevor: I’ll be at Alan’s table, so I’m sure we’ll see lots of each other!

Oh my word!! That dress is gorgeous!! She is going to be Martha Jefferson!! Wow! Her dream life and her real life are really coming together. And 1776 the musical?? That is the best! The songs are catchy, the lines sprightly, truly incredible musical, except for all the swear words, but otherwise, incredivle. I was definitly not expecting this! Thank you Lora!!!! You made my day!

Awesome update! I love it! I’m a real nerd for historical fashion, so if someone handed me that dress I’d probably be drooling in awe. As usual, the amount of talent in this comic just blows me away.
By the way, I can’t seem to get my hands on 1776 the musical anywhere here in Canada. Any suggestions? I’d love to watch it, (and complain about Americans hogging the historical spotlight, of course. We Canadians just do that because we’re jealous.)
Thanks for the update! I can’t wait for more!

I love ‘1776′ – I did the costumes for it when we did it back in ‘76. The dress should be white, though. And no sequins. The dress sells fine without ’sparklies’ to the back row. It’s the floaty effect of the delicate linen that sells it. I hate to say it, but Unc paid way too much for it. But I guess Broadway spends too much for everything.
When my husband and I got married, our wedding dance music was ‘He Plays The Violin’ from the show. Very difficult to get an instrumental version. Most of the guest had no idea what it was or why we played it, but it was the song we first danced together when we were kids in high school. Our wedding rings are inscribed “yours, yours, yours, yours, yours”(my rings) and ‘Yours, My Dearest Friend” (his). Our anniversary is as close as we could get to July 4th that year. Yeah, we’re big fans of the Adamses. John was a good man.
Interesting thing about the play – a lot of the dialogue comes from documents. Reading the footnotes on it makes your jaw drop.

I love the look on her face when she first steps out of the changing room: was she thinking it’s a bit too costume-y now that she’s been in Colonial dress? Or maybe wondering why it fit so well (now we know!)? Was she blinded by all the sparkles?
Uncle Herc is a HOOT; his dialogue made me fall over, howling. I hope we see more of him beyond this first encounter.
It’ll be exciting to see where you take the main storyline next; I agree that dusty old tomes (or their not-so-dusty PDFs…) are a fabulous place for inspiration. Goodness knows following what you read is keeping me (and my poor librarian, in some cases) on my toes!
on 06 Feb 2010 at 12:45 am 31.Tigershark06 said …
Oh I bet Bea is just flipping out internally over the comment and the costume. It really is a gorgeous dress though!
I luv uncle Herc’s comment “1776, campy little number…”
Coincidence? I think not!
on 06 Feb 2010 at 11:56 am 32.Lora said …
@Beth: I have no idea how to get the movie in Canada. Did you try Amazon? In full disclosure, I’m not a fan of it, lol, as probably revealed by Uncle Herc’s comment.
@Rowan: Hercules didn’t buy the dress, he made it. I’m sure he’s over charging! I got the quote from several people in theater, and also a classmate from college who now does Broadway fashion design. John & Abigail had a great, real love. I love their letters and their story.
@AngelVixen: After an introduction like this, you better believe we’ll see more of Uncle Herc. p.s. good luck to your librarian!

Anybody else get a Captain Hook vibe from Hercules?
on 06 Feb 2010 at 6:12 pm 34.Angie said …
@Archivist – that panel scared my little sister in the preview, because the thought it was a hook.
The preview does indeed make me smile. Uncle Herc reminds me of someone in my family pretty much spot on!
Wanna hear something interesting-ish, kinda. Last year during the Superbowl I was surfing the internet between commericals and stumbled upon The Dreamer. So that makes tomorrow my one year dreamer anniversary!
on 06 Feb 2010 at 6:18 pm 35.Allison said …
I read the line Hercules said about 1776 to my husband, and there was some joy to be had. We’ve had many laughs at the expense of that musical, and share his sentiments on the subject.
I’m kind of disappointed in the looks on Ben’s face right now, though. I know most of us have a bias toward Alan (do I kid myself? Is it perhaps all of us who prefer him?), but if her life is going to be double like this, then hopefully he can at least feign interest. I shall, however, withhold judgment until I see whether Ben tells her how pretty she looks. Alan certainly seemed quite complimentary when she got her new dress, even though he didn’t go into the shop with her (was there an etiquette I’m unaware of in those shops when ladies were getting fitted, or can I give no excuse for Alan not going in?)
I can’t wait until next week! It’s so great to have regular updates again, and I really hope Julie can lighten your load (or already has)!

I wish C2E2 would update their site more often :) But I can’t wait to finally see you and everyone that’s been on the show in person! :D /squee :D
Wonder if they’ll let Press into those sessions, would love to get some footage of that.
Love the costume but whatever will dashing Ben wear? Soon to find out methinks.
on 07 Feb 2010 at 3:27 pm 37.Hiraku536 said …
@Allison, Hm… Alan complimented Bea, partly due to the past he had with her (or rather the 18th century Bea), so they have something to work with since.
Ben’s not interested in art stuff. At least he’s willing to go through with the museum and the costume store for Bea. I think we can at least give him that much creds.
On another note, I have a theory (two, actually) how this story’s gonna end. But, I am praying that one of them won’t come true. Both are pretty bad, but yeah, one of them would be worse. >_<

It doesn’t seem like the TWC button is working for me today D: It says “Address Not Found.” Is it just me, or is anyone else having that problem…?
on 08 Feb 2010 at 12:35 am 40.Allison said …
@Hiraku536: True. But I’m still totally biased. I know Alan and Beatrice have that past, but maybe Ben will still be able to get out how pretty she is, even though their relationship is so new. Or at least their potentially romantic relationship.
Either way, I’m excited to find out.
@Erin: I also have the problem with loading the TWC page. Humbug.
on 08 Feb 2010 at 1:11 am 41.Hiraku536 said …
@Allison, yeah, the relationships still very open as to how it will end. Though something got me thinking. Is this really supposed to be a 21st century Bea dreaming about 18th century? Or is this actually also a 18th century Bea dreaming about 21st century? That conversation she had with Nathan… it sorta opened doors for me <_<
on 08 Feb 2010 at 11:10 pm 42.Allison said …
@ Hiraku536:
ARGH! And we’ll have to wait quite a long time before any of these questions shall be answered.
At least we’ll enjoy the wait.
on 09 Feb 2010 at 12:49 am 43.Hiraku536 said …
Regardless, I’d be happier if it’s 21st century Bea dreaming about 18th century instead of the other way around. Dunno. I feel she’s more suited to live in the 21st century. (Not saying that she doesn’t in 18th century)
It’s just that… her life in 21st century looks so perfect that it’s almost like a “Dream” <_<

been a while since I’ve been here and I’m apparently coming in late, so quick thoughts…
-I love Unc–no, I LUB Uncle Herc. He is just so flipping funny. :)
-Methinks someone’s been sneaking a peek at Bea’s dreams, cause she is freaking out, man. >:)
-lmao at Ben here. I can just hear him thinking, “God, I love this girl, but get me the f— out of here!!!”
@Hiraku&Allison:
I’m pretty sure it’s 21st Bea dreaming about the 18th century. Just my $0.02

Hi~
I been reading the comic for a while now and I love it. I love all the characters but specially the 1776 cast- Alan, Nathan Hale, Knowlton father and son….
but I’m learning to love Ben. he’s nice and funny. i loveeeeeee their kiss by the play’s list.
oh and Bea is super cute.
uncle Herc is kind of cool…but kind of mean? is he going to out his lead on her pregnancy. and then “but what does that mean to my favorite niece”? like I don’t think Bea is that shallow, is she?
also like, the fact that his name is Hercules and he then he said “her mother doesn’t know, her boyfriend doesn’t know but HERCULES MULLIGAN KNOWS”
made me think of the belgian detective Hercules Poirot who always says “but Hercule Poirot knows”.
but I’m really looking forward to more
