Guest Strip- Joanne Renaud!

I met Joanne Renaud through DeviantART. She commented on a drawing I did of Mrs. Betsy Loring, and we got into a conversation about big hair, frilly dresses and Benedict Arnold. I instantly liked her. It turns out Joanne is not only historically saavy, she’s an amazing artist as well. Once, out of the goodness of her heart, she made me Bea, Alan and Betsy Loring fan art. I could be biased, but I think it’s one of her best pieces.

Joanne currently works as a freelance illustrator, and one of the best things about her style is that she still works traditionally. You can feel it in her pieces and it gives her work a classic look and personal, hand-crafted style that I think a lot of modern illustration lacks. Currently, she’s working as the art director for an online magazine dedicated to dark fiction called Dark Valentine–the first issue coming soon!

I think it’s funny that in that first conversation about Betsy Loring Joanne wrote, “You have to give her some high 1770s poufs, like Peggy Shippen. Those are so much fun to draw!” Indeed they are. I hope you enjoy her guest strip The Sultana starring Betsy Loring and Peggy Shippen. (You know, the future Mrs. Benedict Arnold!) Click to see full sized!

In case you missed it, check out the other piece of Guest Art I got this week, by Andrew Chandler!

Dreamer updates should resume next Friday! And I think we have at least one amazing artist left to contribute before then.

And VOTE this week to see a teaser from the Issue #10 cover!

Lora, you have the best guest artists EVAR. Seriously. For three fridays in row now I’ve been laughing hysterically into a couch cushion.

  3. Shadow says:

Heheehee.. That was fantastic! I’m not a fan of Peggy, but that was totally hilarious!

  4. Jenn says:

    Oh. My. Goodness! lol

  5. Leila says:

  6. AngelVixen says:

I never, ever thought I’d say this, but…

Fabulous guest strip!! I love seeing traditional art in comics =D

Speaking of which, Julie’s Nathan sketch card from a while back was AWESOME! I’d have no objection to seeing her do more of the cast like that, haha ;)

  8. Hiraku536 says:

Ahhh… Rich people and their ridiculously tall hair :D
    Won’t it weigh them down?

  9. Albone says:

Ha! Magnificent hair, indeed!! It’s like a peacock! Really awesome strip. I see Betsy has some cards in her hand on that last page. Makes me wonder what hand she had. XD

  10. Lora says:

@Albone: I think it’s apparent that Howe was winning. ;)

Glad you all enjoyed this! I think it’s fabulous.

  11. wynne says:

Aw, poor Peggy! She’s such a spunky character!

I can’t believe I actually remember Major Andre from “Liberty’s Kids” on PBS.

  12. Brent says:

For some reason, i hear Peggy as sounding a lot like Jenna Fischer.

  13. Emily says:

Love the guest strip with Peggy Shippen! Ann Rinaldi was one of my favorite authors in high school, and Finishing Becca was one of my favorites. Peggy was such an amazing character, the perfect foil to the protagonist. This took me back.

  14. Charmaine says:

Aw, Peggy is so cute in this guest comic strip! <3 I like the way Joanne Renaud drew John Andre! <3 :-)

@wynne I remember John Andre from Liberty's Kids, too! Seeing him in this comic reminded me of the Liberty's Kids Andre. :-)

  15. Angie says:

Peggy Shippen is my FAVORITE! Random, right? But I’m not kidding.

  16. Lora says:

By the mid 19th century, Nathan Hale had become a national hero, but strangely enough John Andre had become an object of American fascination as well. I read a book in the Colonial Williamsburg Library that contrasted the lives and fates of the two spies. I can’t remember what it was called, though.

  17. trevor says:

    oh that’s awesome!

  18. Angie says:

I think I have that book in my car right now, if its the same one its called … “The Two Spies”

  19. Lady B says:

LMAO!!! I LOVE the Peggy Shippen strip! Bloody hilarious! Though I would not have thought her to be so… innocent though. ;) She’s not all that well liked.
    Poor Andre. Poor poor Andre.

  22. Thanks for the sensible critique. Me & my neighbor were just preparing to do a little research on this. We got a grab a book from our area library but I think I learned more clear from this post. I am very glad to see such excellent information being shared freely out there.
