Yvette, have you learned nothing? PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS.
We’re off! New Page #1!
Every time I open a new document and have to title it “Page 1″ I feel a huge wave of anxiety. But then I finish page one, and then two, and before I know it the issue is half over and I’m scrambling to write a new one.
I’m not sure why on earth my AP History teacher loved William Jennings Bryan so much. I swear we spent more time on him than Abraham Lincoln. We had huge binders full of Xerox copies of primary source documents and news articles we had to read through for every test. At the time, I hated it. But it did instill in me the importance of tracking down those sources whenever you can to do your research to fact check and find out for yourself. So thank you, Mr. Trainer. I’m sure I didn’t say thanks when we spent an entire semester on Reconstruction… but I’m saying it now.
I’ll be at Otakon in Baltimore, July 27 – 29!
We have a superstar line up. I’m in Artists Alley right next to the amazing Comfort Love & Adam Withers, my sister and her Teena Bee handbags, and my BFF in comics, Alan Evans! Not to mention that my best friend since first grade is going to be my table assistant. Otakon is a crazy convention. I’d love to see you there!
Look for The Dreamer and Teena Bee at Booths Q07 and Q08!
*VOTE this week for a sneak peek at the next page!*
*And don’t forget the new death of Dr. Warren “Three Days Ago” Short Story is now for sale! Available in either PDF/ePub format or MP3 Audio Book!*
Three days have passed since the battle of Bunker Hill and rumors that the famous Dr. Warren was killed have reached the people who loved him most in this brand new Dreamer story.

Someone’s going to do a report on Nathan, aren’t they? And Bea’s going to freak out when she finds out what happens to him.
That’s my guess (for the record)
Feels odd, being back in the 21st century.
Well, she doesn’t know about Knowlton yet, either. I think finding out about either him or Nathan will do her under.
Or, she could remember a lot of things she didn’t realize she even knew–like from her other life in the 18th century.
I’m sure her history teacher will be surprised that Bea Whaley has actually learned something about history, lol.
My guess is that whatever happens in this issue, there will be freaking out! :)
Is Nathan Hale really that much of an ‘unknown” hero? We spent quite a bit of time talking about him in my high school history class…
Knowlton, however, I honestly never heard of until I started reading this comic.
Yeah, until I started reading this comic Knowlton was just that soldier in the white shirt bravely facing the oncoming enemy with his upraised musket in the Trumbull Bunker Hill painting.
I think Hale was mentioned once in both my U.S. History classes…but out in Oklahoma, we didn’t spend a lot of time on the Revolution. That was something that happened back east.
The reason I suspect Nathan and not Knowlton is it’s too late for her to do anything for Thom, but not for Nathan, and while she’s sworn off trying to change history, she’ll be mighty tempted to try to save him.
HAHAHA! Ol’ Billy-Jay Bryan, eh? My college history Prof went off on a tangent about him too. God I loved my history prof. He had a way with telling history, not teaching it, telling it, like the intricate story of ourselves that it is, even the kids who weren’t into history were entranced…yeah, I based a character off of him, I did. My prof, I mean. XD Professor J. Ambrose Smith, who will be making a marked appearance in my next novel(s) as Jeremiah’s oldest friend.
Anyway I’m rambling. Ooooh I just know this is not going to go well for Bea. If it’s not Nathan it’s going to be Joseph or someone else she’s going to get spastic about. I can see this class period ending with her in the nurse’s office in a swoon, or the principal’s office for getting too heated with someone who says the wrong thing. lol
It’s certainly too late for Joseph and Knowlton, but if Bea DOES learn about Nathan’s fate she might decide to actually try to save him when she returns to the past, and basically alter history. You know how headstrong she can be!
I had a wonderful American history teacher in high school. She knew her stuff in-depth and would just sit back in her chair and tell stories. And God bless her, she actually mentioned Joseph Warren! (And William Dawes, whom she affectionately called “Billy D” with a happy smile.)
How far along in American history do high school classes get these days? There’s a scene from The Simpsons where it’s the end of the school year and all the kids are running out the doors, cheering. The history teacher comes running after them yelling, “Wait! Wait! You didn’t find out how World War 2 ended!” That’s how it was back in my day – we’d have 40 years of history crammed into 3 days of final exam prep. I had to read up on the Korean War (and everything afterwards) on my own.
I’m figuring the average high school student knows much more about Snooki than Joseph Warren. Heck, many probably don’t know J.W. even existed!
I refuse to answer that question based solely on the fact that we focused more on events than people, and that includes college courses.
Actually, and in all seriousness, I’ve leaned more about the revolution in the past four years by reading and fact-checking this than I ever did in school.
Same here. But I still say more high school kids would recognize a picture of Snooki than one of Joseph Warren. It’s the power of modern media.
I am thankful and proud that I don’t think I could pick Snooki out of a lineup.
Last semester when I spent a full five weeks reviewing for my APUSH exam, a friend and I got into a conversation about Henry Clay and compromises. I’ll never forget what she said…
“Henry Clay is one of those historical figures who never dies, kind of like William Jennings Bryan…every time you think he is finally gone he pops up and runs for president.”
I miss APUSH…..
I remember with fondness my APUSH days….. Though we did not spend enough time on the Civil War for my taste.
The very best thing about my APUSH class, though, was when we were assigned some reading in the textbook in the American Revolution chapter, and there was mention of the fort in our town. Apparently, the British marched a regiment to Fort Ontario in late November or early December, which they captured, but then they got snowed in and were unable to assist in any other operations until spring.
Just to clarify why this was hilarious for us, besides the local mention in the history book, is because our town can easily get 3 feet of snow in an hour during a lake effect snow storm. So it could have been a matter of mere hours that the British got snowed in.
HAHAHAA!!!!!!!!!!!
Ah, for the days when punishments included teacher-picked topics…..although I would have “suggested” Knowlton. Or maybe Thomas Gage.
And yeah, I’m……not expecting as big a freakout as everyone else. I mean, Alan knows about Knowlton and will (probably) tell her before the presentation happens, so……worst case, there’s only one unexplained teary run to the bathroom.
INCENTIVE CAPTION!!!
Bea: “Okay……the Ikea bed set, my grandmother’s afghan, and the colonel’s collection.”
Yvette: *opening envelope* “Name three things that are cozy.”
I once again was tearing up, just looking at the first panel, cuz I know you’re putting Thom and Nathan in there SOMEWHERE as presentations…Oh God, I just had another theory dawn on me as I wrote the previous sentence
You just KNOW she’ll freak if their names and histories come up!
and incite her to try and rescue Nathan…burning down New York while she’s at it
Yep, that’s our Bea! You go, girl!
pffft! How much u wanna bet Alan would actually /help/ with the insanity this time???
Yeah! William Jennings Who indeed! I can’t wait to see how Bea handles things in the 21st century, poor girl looks worn out. I can only imagine. You’re awake for about 24hours around the clock. :(
I know! She literally doesn’t get any rest when she’s “resting”! Poor kid!
Greetings from Dublin! What a surprise an early update!
Also, my old APUSH teacher had a WJB love as well. He was on the exam that year though…
I guess it says something about all of our history profs and teachers that we each remember William Jennings Bryan. They probably all belonged to the “Remember W. J. B. Society.” :P
I saw the title of the page and my first thought was, “Wasn’t he that guy who ran for president who thought that the US currency should be based on silver instead of gold?” If I (the woman who loathed history classes when she was young and forced to take them) can remember that much information about an historical figure, then he cannot, by definition, be classified as “forgotten”…especially when you take into consideration all of the comments so far from people who remember him from history classes. :)
Oh…and YAY for page 1! I don’t know why you’d be nervous starting a new chapter at this point, Lora. We’re all absolutely gaga for your story and drooling over your characters, so you’ve got a captive audience. :D
Just anxious in the sense that it’s daunting. A “here we go again…” kind of dread.
Yes, after 15 issues not so daunting as it used to be. That is true!
LMAO at panel 5! Yvette and Bea’s expressions are PRICELESS. Seriously, they never learn. Different teacher, same result. XD
Panel 3 is fun. I like the girl blowing gum, and is that John I see?
Yup! All the kids are back in this scene. I’ve missed them. I realized the last time I drew Yvette was Issue #7!! So wrong! She’s one of my favs.
Eep, did I miss Liz? Is she headband girl in front of Bea?
Yvette has steadily been climbing the list on my favorites. She’s so sneaky, and yet that doesn’t seem her style. Maybe clever is a better word. :P
Issue #7?!! Egad, has it been THAT long ago?
I’m SO glad The Dreamer is back! I missed it :D And that’s all I’m going to contribute this time :P Because I think everyone has got it covered :D I’m just guessing Bea’s going to burst into tears after she hears the history of someone she knows.
Nah…she’ll just hear the name she recognizes, plug her ears, and start humming to herself so she won’t feel obligated to change history again. :P
Can’t say I’d blame her. Not after that Bunker Hill/Breed’s Hill fiasco with Nathan in issue #4!
“It was the same….BATTLE!”
…..and she did tell Yvette that she’s off trying to change things too, remember. Still, what might she do with such knowledge? Maybe something like….. this?
“Hey, @ProvidenceMan, GTFO of where you are ASAP! Thx! <3 ^_^ <3 Luv, @FutureMrsWarren
I think @ProvidenceMan’s iPhone is “roaming” right now.
Or hidden in one of his shoes. :(
That’s why he didn’t get the message ^_^

Hey, you forgot Mary @TheDocsMomma and Ben T: @Mr.Latin
And Alan toatally needs to be @CozyCraver
@HalfMoon: (snerk)
Actually, that was gonna be Knowlton’s, but he ded, so i didn’t bother including it. You’re totally right about Mary though.
Okaaay, I just have to delurk and to a “Woot, Woot!” for William Jennings Bryan. My hometown is his hometown… Salem, Illinois. Also, everyone should look up the Scopes Monkey Trial. The teacher involved (John Scopes) went to high school in Salem, too. Too bad Mr. Bryan was on the wrong side (imho) in the trial :P and that he died not long after. But he was pretty important. Look at how many times he tried to win the presidency!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Scopes
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salem,_Illinois
And I know, I know, wiki isn’t that reliable, but trust a native Salemite that learned most of this in high school, the wiki pages have pretty much the basics. And Mr Bryan was a very interesting man, even if I didn’t agree with him on everything.
Here is the town site’s history of William Jennings Bryan: http://www.salemil.us/Pages/FV1-00024170/S008FEDDB-0364678E
Now I’m going to hope that someone does a paper on him >.>
Also, also, also! I love this comic! And I love that you picked one of the famous people from my little town for this posting… which was done on my BIRTHDAY! So yeah, it feels like a gift XD And yeah, I’m day late seeing this, but it was my birthday when you posted it (the 10th, of course). So… Thanks for everything! :D
Mila this was *totally* my birthday gift to you! Hope you had a happy day and thanks for reading!!
Sounds like MY history teacher in my senior year of high school! Every time we started a new section, there was an inch’s worth of Xerox copies for our binders! But they helped so much more than the actual text, to be honest.
Can’t wait to see the next page!
I must admit that is a really awesome assignment that I’ve never heard of. And I’ve noticed some comments are wondering about who is considered forgotten or not such as if Nathan Hale has been forgotten already or not. What people have to remember is that many times teachers will stop and go into detail on things and people they are interested so that one US teacher may tell you who Nathan Hale is and another won’t. For example, I had never heard of him until college. Also, different states have different standards so in some you may need to learn about someone like William Jennings Bryan and in others you may not have to learn about him and the Populist Movement.
Connecticut being one of those……excellent points, Rebecca
Whatever happened to passing notes in class? Include little doodles on lined paper so they can be kept in a drawer for years to come.
And folded up into a little football!
