New Page #20!

I’ll be attending Mid Ohio Con this weekend, October 22nd and 23rd. Look for me in Artist Alley, I’ll be taking commissions and selling Dreamer swag: buttons, magnets, prints, stickers… We’ll be selling the “A Providential Hello” comic with both covers, and prints! If you can’t make the show, and really want to get a copy of the comic, or a lovely print, or both! you can get them online here (and they’ll be signed by both of us!) until this Sunday, October 23rd.

And don’t forget to Pre Order your copies of The Dreamer Vol. 1 and 2! (IDW Publishing) If you order them via a bookstore or comic shop, it is the best way to support me. More books in stores means more of my books on bookstore shelves. Use these order codes to do that:

Vol 1: 978-1-60010-465-7

Vol 2: 978-1-61377 – 031-3

And VOTE to preview Friday’s update!

Poor poor Nathan. He’s out of his league. Poor baby. Don’t you creeps talk about his scar! Just because he has a powder scar doesn’t mean he’s automatically a soldier! * pointedly ignores the fact Nathan IS a soldier, and huggles him* It gives you character and makes you look manly, mate. And soldiers are sexy anyway. And you made spying cool before James Bond or Chuck Bartowski were even born.

I think what makes me the most sad about Nathan’s situation is how lonely he had to be. Breaks my heart. I’d do anything to have a friend with me, just so we could watch out for each other, or be together if the worst happened. At least there’s always G-d, no matter what, right?

The VI: Huzzah Benjamin! You run ‘em off! You show ‘em! Teach ‘em a lesson and give ‘em a whooping they won’t soon forget.

    • Grace says:

What’s more, from reading Nate’s biography, I suspect he knew he was going to die. And I think he also realized that even if he did make it out alive – there was little opportunity or acceptance for spies waiting around. I just want to hug him…Poor, poor Nate.

Oh Nate, what -are- you going to say about that scar? Hunting accident, maybe? You’re a terrible liar, though. Be careful, Love. Do not make this any more painful than it already was.

Nice page though, really. I am still thinking of the Snuggly Duckling scene from Tangled, only this is ten times more painful and involves less Mandy Moore.

And my mother bought me A Providential Hello as well. :) I am pleased as punch.

  2. Caera says:

Oh and my sweet Mummy got me the Providential Hello set to add to my “memorabilia collection that’s going to be worth a fortune in ten years.” lol Early Xmas present methinks. :) I told her not to order the Vol. 2 because I’m getting that from my shop. One way or the other I should be gainfully employed by this time next week. :D

I wish I was at the Con! At least I get to attend Sironia’s movie premiere tomorrow and see some old friends over the weekend. :)

    • Niki says:

Early Christmas gift eh? You kidding? I’m getting the two graphic novels for *myself* this Christmas ;) No one in my family knows about my Dreamer obsession. They think I’m nuts enough as it is for loving the eighteenth century ;)

      • Caera says:

My Mum’s as nuts as I am about The Dreamer but she doesn’t collect. I’m all about the story and the swag. lol

Plus I’ve been talking about Nathan Hale for nearly 2 decades so there was no keeping this a secret either way.

I’ve got the first graphic novel already; just gotta get the second one once it’s time. :D

  3. telenica says:

I just started reading the dreamer and i love it, oh and I LOVE Nathan. He is my favorite character. I just wish i could go back and alter time. I really enjoy your style. Keep up the great work.

  4. Brent says:

That dude really reminds me of Gary Oldman for some obvious reason….this will definitely end sooner than anticipated

the VI — Go Benny, ride the horsie, it’s your birthday…

    INCENTIVE CAPTION!!!!

Tallmadge: “Come on, Shadowfax! Their bullets can’t touch us!”
Shadowfax: “The hell you say, boy! I’m going back to Middle-Earth, the wizard pays me better anyway!”

  5. Gina says:

    Oh, Nathan. ;_____;

  6. Half Moon says:

    O.O meep. Nathan……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….DON’T LEAVE ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. “I only regret that I have but one life to give for my country.” – Nathan Hale

  8. deb says:

I JUST BOUGHT MY COPIES OF A PROVIDENTIAL HELLO! Was super worried PayPal wasn’t going to accept my card like the last time. It works! So excited now!!! <3

But not excited for Nate. :((( Hang in there buddy!

    • Lora says:

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So glad you were able to get it!

It sounds like you got both covers, eh? Couldn’t pick? ;)

      • deb says:

It was *SO* hard to choose!! It went along the lines of they’re both so pretty! They’re both so amazing! Oh my gosh, I’m not one for drama but I LOVE THEM BOTH! I CAN’T PICK ONE!! Now, I’ve the two besties to look forward to in the mail :D

Have a great time at Mid-Ohio Con! Wish I could be there to hang out! :X

  9. Amber says:

Oh, Nathan! You poor poor soul! *Reaches across time and hugs Nathan* There, there it will be alright. I won’t let those nasty rangers get you!

Or.. will I. Oh, what can one do when the heart is willing but history will not compromise?
    Nathan! *sniffs”

  10. Jen says:

Poor Nathan! Bullying is so mean.

Also, Nathan’s channeling a bit of “young Tom Hanks” in that second to last panel, doncha think? Or is it just me?

  11. Pennants says:

    Oh, Nathan, be careful!

Beautiful update! You’ve perfectly evoked the tavern – I can practically smell the ale and the tobacco smoke!

  12. nessili says:

I must still be half-asleep, because my first thought when looking at this page this morning was: “It comes in pints?!”

    Love the VI–Ben looks awesome.

  13. Shawnie Peck says:

Poor Nathan. I have a bad feeling about this! And yeah for Ben on the Calvery! You did well on the horses

  14. David says:

Is the Robert Rogers mentioned in the page #19 blog the same guy who led the Rogers Rangers unit in the French and Indian War? I’d read somewhere that he became a Loyalist commander when the Revolution started but I didn’t know he was a “spy hunter”. Anyway, it would be interesting to see Knowlton’s Rangers take on their Loyalist counterparts, especially when you consider how brutal the Patriots and Loyalists were to each other. In many ways the American Revolution was also basically a civil war. The big irony is that the Patriots were pretty much doing what the Confederacy tried to do in the 1860′s, breaking away from the “Mother Country”!

  15. Kristee says:

That JERK!!! I could kill him!!! Poor Nathan. That’s just not right.

  16. Rae says:

aww poor Nathan he seems self-conscious about his scar, stupid guys!

  17. Celidah says:

Poor Nathan. I personally cannot WAIT to get my own copy of “A Providential Hello”. I’ll have you know, Lora, that your comic is the very first print version of the webcomics I read that I’ve ever bought. So, you’d better feel honored. (just kidding. I do enjoy this, though! And I will definitely be putting The Dreamer on my “buy” list as well!)

  18. Hazel says:

I love how you portrayed Roger’s lads (if my memory does not fail me and it was Roger’s Rangers who took Nathan, right?) They look so nasty. This volume is really heart-felt. I like how you have Bea reading his letter during it all.

  19. Scott M says:

@ Brent: Sure, you could stick to one universe, but why would you want to?

Lora, very high quality page, though I probably don’t get all the foreshadowing as much as some. He wasn’t someone we covered in school up here, and I deliberately haven’t gone to research since I started reading your comic.

  20. ShellyLou says:

Oh, the last couple of pages have honestly made me want to cry! :( Oh, and poor Nathan is going to die :( :( and he was one of my favourite characters! & poor Frederick, oh, its all so upsetting… :(

  21. Silvre says:

Oooh, you leave Nathan alone! *throws chair at suspicious-looking men*

  22. David says:

Lora, A few pages back you said that Nathan didn’t really use an alias on his mission and I’m taking your word for it, So does this mean the story that he posed as a Dutchman is just some Revolution “myth”? Because “Nathan Hale” just doesn’t sound like a Dutch name! Anyway, I was wondering if you or someone else could clear up this little mystery.

    • Grace says:

He was indeed posing a Dutch school teacher. But, for some reason or other (inexperience, most likely) did not change his name.

    • KarenSDR says:

I’ve always thought that he altered his diploma. One of the accounts of his capture says they caught a spy named “Nathaniel Hales”. He could have added a few letters to his diploma to make that change. I’ve never seen that theory in print anywhere, but the longer name made me think of it. I used that in my Enemy Spies story.

      • Lora says:

His name was spelled Nathaniel Hale on the ships log that took him to Long Island. Nathaniel Hales isn’t much of an alias! Misspellings and variants in names aren’t uncommon between these old documents and records. You can’t bring a 21st century mindset to the accounts. What he was doing was very shameful in that society. Knowing what I do about him, I imagine he conducted himself with as much integrity & virtue throughout the affair as he could.

  23. Eva says:

Poor Nathan! He’s got that nervous little sweat droplet on his forehead as he walks out!

Seriously, such a brave man. He knew what he was getting himself into, but he didn’t back down.
A week ago, we had to write journals in my German class about our heroes, and I wrote about Nathan Hale. And then again in English class, we’re studying the Odyssey and discussing how Odysseus talks to a bunch of dead people in the Underworld, and I was asked who I’d want to bring back and talk to if I had the chance. Naturally, I said Hale again. Not that I’d want him to relive his last moments, but I’d want to get to know such a brave man a little bit better. Anyways, I had to explain who he was to three different people. It makes me sad that the only thing they know about him is that he said the famous quote, “My only regret is that I have but one life to give for my country,” and that’s only -after- I tell them the quote and who said it. :(

I think you’re doing him great justice so far, Laura. Although I’m dreading the end of this storyline, I’m also really interested in seeing how you portray it in The Dreamer. As usual, I can’t wait for the next update!

    • Caera says:

Hehehe, I always did projects on Nathan in school. He’s like my default setting. :D

      • David says:

You know the Doctor is going to want the Tardis back eventually, or did you and Half Moon manage to travel to Gallifrey somehow and “acquire” a different one? If that’s the case then hopefully this new Tardis will have a working camouflage device! Let’s face it, Blue police boxes are pretty uncommon in most places in time and space.

        • Caera says:

The Doctor gave us a piece of the TARDIS to grow our own, of course! lol

          • Lora says:

I saw it yesterday at Mid Ohio Con! But some guy was carrying it around and there were too many people to glomp him then & there.

          • Caera says:

Carrying the TARDIS? That one must be smaller on the outside. lol

Wish I could come to the Con sometime this millennium. XD

          • Half Moon says:

I must figure out how to get photos on the computer!!!!! I met a guy in Tenant cosplay, and got my picture with him while I held the screwdriver!!!

I think I’ve already mentioned this, but it was epic, and I’m dying to make that a blog post

          • Caera says:

Blog it blog it blog it! :D

          • David says:

Oh, right! I forgot you can do that with Tardises. Give River my regards if she shows up! And by the way, do you intend to use the camouflage device on your new Tardis or just keep it in one external appearance? If it’s the latter, what will it look like?

          • Caera says:

Oh here’s an interesting question-River Tam or River Song? lol

I kind of like the whole blue box thing but I guess we’d have to do something else since the Doctor claimed that one.

  24. frostquinn says:

I’m so excited about vol.2 !! Which issues would it be collecting?

  25. Julie says:

I managed to buy my copy of A Providential Hello before this weekend (good thing since I was kind of busy getting married O_O). :D

Poor Nathan!! This was just uncomfortably awkward.

    • David says:

@ Caera: River Song, of course! But anyway, what ever shape you decide on should have an easy entrance/exit opening for emergencies. And what I’ve been referring to as the camouflage device is actually known as a ” Chameleon Circuit”, but then you probably already know that!

  26. David says:

@ Caera: I hope you’ll remember to approach River Tam with caution and try to keep her away from any potential weapons if she ever does show up there! lol
