New Page #8! Our boys clean up well!

I took the opportunity to draw into this scene two of my favorite officers: General Israel “Old Put” Putnam and Colonel Prescott, both of whom fought at Bunker Hill. Colonel Prescott is the man whose statue stands outside of the Bunker Hill monument. (Joseph Warren’s statue is inside.)
Today’s update takes place inside the Morris-Jumel mansion, the house George Washington used as his headquarters during this part of the New York campaign. It is still standing today, and you can tour it! It is the oldest building in Manhattan. Carol Ward, the educational director of the house, wrote a guest blog post for The Dreamer back when the house first appeared in the comic in issue #9. You can read her post here.
The show that I co-host, Paper Wings Podcast, is throwing a contest. You can win one of three WACOM tablets! Check out the complete rules here. And I *KNOW* you guys have what it takes to win. I see the Dreamer fan art contest entries you send in year after year! I sure hope to see a few of you enter. One of the quotes you can choose to be inspired by is Jane Austen!
And as always, VOTE this week to preview Friday’s update!

Who are the two other officers in the update?
D’oh. Let me update my blog post. :P
They make dapper gentlemen, that’s for sure! Hai there Fourth Panel Alan. *_*
Interesting thing about this time period – the way Alan describes his lack of education in panel four makes him sound more educated than most people today. :o
I do believe a “Hnnnggg, TAKE ME NOW” is necessary. No wonder the ladies aren’t allowed in these quarters. They’d go crazy. Hahahaha.
That aside, I’m glad Alan’s not coughing so badly anymore. But those bags! He still needs to rest for sure! :(
The sheer amount of awesome in this page just made me explode. Gotta go clean up the mess. lol
My guess concerning the officers is Henry Knox and… hmm… maybe John Stark? The fellow in the wig is rather on the stout side and is wearing an artillery uniform, so that stands to reason. The other one seems like a colonel or other field officer who was present at Bunker Hill, and my guess is Stark, but that’s a shot in the dark.
Knowlton shaved?!? Knowlton actually owns a razor?! My mind, she is blown! I’m kind of shocked he gave into social convention and conformed. (And kind of disappointed he didn’t attend the officer’s meeting looking like a hobo. Now *that* would have been awesome.)
LOL! I barely recognized Knowlton without his scruff :)
Awesome update!
Oh wait…that is Knowlton without scruff isn’t it? lol jk He really is close to unrecognizable. Only the dialogue gave him away.
I thought Knowlton looked a little cleaner than usual…I just figured it was the forced perspective making me see things. As for GW….well, all work as ever….and what’s the odds Freddy and Bea are closer than Knowlton wants them to all this?
INCENTIVE CAPTION!!!
Alan: “So….these tea cozies you have, General…they’re very….
Knowlton: (thinking) Don’t say pleasant, don’t say pleasant, don’t say pleasant, don’t say…
Alan: “….pleasant.”
Washington: *twitch*
Knowlton: Damn it, Warren….
Glad to see Alan at the Adult table! Lots of rank and medals in the room too. Plus, the dapper meter is off the chart. Now, if only Nathan and Hamilton were in attendance… XD
I don’t usually comment on updates, but you’re right, Lora–Knowlton and Alan are looking pretty snazzy, especially now that Alan has his lovely new coat!
Oh, and, seeing as General Washington has reappeared… I saw this special on the History International channel where they’ve reconstructed his face in 3-D via a plaster life mask…it was really neat, and I for one think you draw him spot-on!
Oh, Brent! Lol! I love your incentive captions! They make roflol! XD As for the update, it takes my breath away with its beauty. What I would give to be there in that room right now… : )
Oh wow…Helloooooooooo Alan! *wolf whistles*
He cleans up very spiffy. Knowlton, on the other hand, looks way more attractive scruffy imo… :)
Ha ha, I actually drew this page with Knowlton’s beard and without. He does look a little odd without it, but in the end, I went for historical accuracy. There is NO WAY a Colonel in the army would get away with going to a meeting like this without cleaning up first. Thomas Knowlton was a great soldier. He knew the rules.
I actually like him this way. I think he’s cute!
@deb: Looks like Alan’s fever has broken for the moment. p.s. Bea does not appreciate your first comment.
@Michael: Israel Putnam and William Prescott!
@Albone: Give Hamilton a few months and he’ll be at *all* of George Washington’s meetings. In fact, he’ll never leave his side! As for Nathan, I think he & Washington are set to have a secret pow-wow after this official meeting is over.
@Anna: I saw that when I saw the Mt. Vernon Washington exhibit that was touring last year. You can read about my visit here: http://thedreamercomic.com/blog.php/?p=2247
@Lora: Does that mean he’ll be seen as clean-shaven from here on out? And just for my own edification, could any CO get away with the scruffy look, cause I seem to remember something about beards being a point of pride with some people…
Ooh, lots of uniforms! And Washington! Huzzah! (When I was younger, I lived in a house on land that used to be part of Mt. Vernon for a few years, so I’m very happy to see him.) The little details in this are amazing, too. That chandelier, and all the fabric…
Is it just me, or is Knowlton’s uniform different in the third panel?
Time to face the music armed with this great inofrmaiotn.
I repeat…O.o Alan?!? And now…Knowlton!?!? Wow they look so different cleaned up. And the backgrounds are gorgeous!
@Brent: How much you wanna bet Bea’s at the top of the nearest stairs listening?
@Half Moon: I got fifteen 1776 cents which says she is, either alone or with Freddy. That should be about…..thirty dollars today, maybe, I’m not sure.
They do clean up well, for sure. But we all know the truth. The truth is that Nathan Hale is a Typhoid Mary. He’s spreading plague through the colonies like nobody’s business.
Next time Bea kisses him, she’s going to wake up in modern times with chills and a fever of 106.
Then, when she goes back to sleep, she’ll experiment with her ability to bring things from her time with her – and will give the man a netty pot. They help.
I agree with Gina about how Alan describes his education. Man, that time period… :D
And I’m gonna echo what everyone else has already said and say that Alan and Knowlton clean up really well XD
It’s cool seeing Putnam and Prescott make an appearance, too! I always love seeing your interpretations of historical figures pop up in the comic :D
Ha! I see other people beat me to my comment… I looked and looked at Knowlton, thinking something seemed off, then realized he must have shaved! This is similar to how I look at real people when they’ve gotten a haircut or shaved their facial hair — it’s disorienting to have the same experience over an illustrated character! Way to be true to life, Lora!
@Trevor —-say wwwhhhaattt???? lol I just flatlined and then laughed at that Typoid Mary statement.
*Typhoid
Knowlton. So hot.
I squeed when I read that Putnam and Prescott were present (and I’m really, really, hoping Greene appears soon, I love learning about his “march”).
… And now I miss my American Revolution class. Wow… I’m a history nerd.
wow alan looks so spiffy I didn’t even recognize him at first! Great page :)
My Dad loved this page as much as I did! I showed him the preliminary sketch on Facebook, and he was really impressed – the completed, colored work knocked his socks off. (Yeah, he’s one of those old guys who wears socks in the summer.) We both just finished reading The Whites of Their Eyes by Paul Lockhart, so we’ve been spending some time with Prescott and Ol’ Put. What fun, to see them here in the “flesh”!
@Brent: o.o” I have absolutly no idea how much that would be. lol.
@ Owl: You’re not the only one… :D
@Owl: Hey, what about old Benedict Arnold? For the current date, he won’t be defecting for at least another ten months. How long ’til we see him?
I will add my voice to the others who didn’t recognize Knowlton clean-shaven. He looks much younger (and, appropriately, more like Freddie). Hah!
@Kal: Freddy has good genes to grow into!
