Well you all have been asking me one big question for a long time now: When will Bea wake up? Today we have Pages 15 & 16 and with them… the story finally returns to in the 21st Century. So Bea says goodnight and goodbye to Alan… For now.

I love these pages. I loved writing them, I loved drawing them, I loved coloring them. I adore the original lyrics to Amazing Grace…
This was another important week for The Dreamer. Issue #5 hit comic stores everywhere week! I hope you got your copy, I loved mine. If you can’t find a local comic book shop, order it online. Also, don’t forget to pre-order Issue #6, online or at your local comic book shop! The order code is: MAR094338, the publisher is IDW.
And VOTE this week to preview next Friday’s pages!

Ohh, I was almost tearing up when I read these pages… I could just imagine the quite scenery, Alan singing, the confusion in Bea’s mind…. it just plays like a movie. So beautiful. *sniff*
These two pages were so emotional and i loved it! I love the way that Bea and Alan’s relationship has developed and I can’t wait to see more!
HE SINGS!? Oh my gosh, I’m so in love!
Beautiful pages! I can’t wait for them to be printed!
Beautiful work…my favorite pages so far…also, you could have given Bea a stay that also laced on the sides. They used them sometimes for pregnancies, although stays could lead to premature birth anyway.
An imagined candle in the window for those who died tonight in King Street, and another candle for the soldiers whose lives were threatened and who fired in defense. A third candle for Josiah Quincy Jr. and John Adams for defending the soldiers. A fourth candle for even those who threw ice and snow and oyster shells at the soldiers, this fourth candle for the mob that attacked them, for even they must be remembered. And a fifth candle for the mob returning out for the soldiers’ blood, for that mob too must be remembered. Amen.
Look, I can’t take it, you HAVE have have have to update more than once a week!
<3
also, thanks, cos you’re awesome and
Alan can sing?!?!!!
I LOVE this week’s pages. LOVE. LOVE them.
What a bit of storytelling.
And the God I love; so many of them loved him too. A solid, unshakeable strength in those times. Oh, how amazing that is.
It was a fairly new song at that point…probably already on many lips even then tho… I didn’t know those old lyrics. Nice to know them!
OMG!!! I absolutely love this update. I have to say that this update has brightened my week. I’m going into my finals at school and they are starting to kill me slightly so this is definitely a high for the week.
I was wondering if Bea was finally going to wake up and now she is….
But oh my goodness I absolutely love page 15 I think it’s my favorite if not just one of my many favorites of this comic. The color, composition, and dialogue are soo seamless in this page. I would blow it up and make it a poster to put on my wall!
So I have to say I’m so going to miss seeing Alan and I’m sure Bea is too. Awww they are so cute. I think him singing is a beautiful exit though. A perfect transition to the real world.
Is there anything the amazing Alan can’t do? Goodness lets see:
1. Attractive and especially good looking
2. Good Morals and Values
3. Knows how to protect his gal
4. He’s a “real” man
5. Fights for what he believes
6. Loyal
8. Honest
9. Trustworthy
10. Freaking amazing
And now he can sing!! It was nice to rediscover the original lyrics to Amazing Grace. They are really beautiful and I forget how often I take the words to that song for granted.
So awesome and looking forward to next week!!!
Amazing Grace. The most beautiful song one can hear.
They’re my favourite pages too! So mellow and sad. :)
Can’t wait till next week. You’re all that’s keeping me up and looking forward to the weekends.
I found The Dreamer a couple months ago and fell in love with it. I love the story and the art, so amazing! I’m always looking forward to your Friday updates! I love the way you tell history, you’ve obviously got a passion about it that I wish my teachers had because you make it so interesting!
I’m with Lotte 150%. Even though Nathan’s more my type, I do agree that Alan is also a pretty fantastic specimen of male. :D Bea is SO lucky. And I love that song, even more so after I saw the movie “Amazing Grace” a couple of years ago (I was a sophomore in HS). The story behind the writing of the song is pretty inspiring.
I wonder if Alan knows that Bea can hear him through the door? :) Would he care if he did know? =D
And so the dream ends on a very soothing, reflective note (quite a contrast to George “I’LL SINK ALL THE BOATS GRAAAAR” Washington)…. very lovely effect on the mind, and almost makes me wish this comic was a movie or something. ^___^ It’s such a work of art in comic form, though, that I’d be half-afraid of what the transition would do.
I have to say that I absolutly love this comic and please please please continue it. Getting the updates is seriously one of my few highlights of my week.
Your artwork just keeps getting better and better. The past issue has been simply beautiful, and I cannot wait to see more.
page 15 has to be the most beautiful page i’ve see you do. that last panel brought tears to my eyes and i found myself hoping she would never wake up. bravo :)
It’s already been said, but I still want to add: really beautiful pages! You should love them, because they’re really great.
wow, now I can really see the Dreamer movie, someday, (sigh)
Can’t you just let Bea sleep forever?
I love this comic so, so, so, SOOOOOOOOO much! This week’s pages were especially beautiful; this is such a great way to start the weekend!
Arghh! Even though I love how you actually consistently update this comic (as I’ve run into many artists who just…. disappear for months on end…) I still die a little every time I don’t see the link for the next page! This comic is a DRUG and I’m freakin’ ADDICTED to it!
lol
The new pages are so pretty!!! I wish Alan was mine (sigh)….But then we would have no comic, so it’s better this way. I love those lyrics!!! They’re so perfect for the moment and really seem to capture what Alan, and people in general, must have been feeling. So I guess it’s back to the real world for Bea and good-bye to Alan. Hey, is Yvette climbing through a window?
Question:Several of you are asking for updates more than once a week. I… really can’t commit to a three pages a week schedule, unless Albonia remains my indentured-slave. But I have been considering, when we do the site relaunch (Mike is working on it now!) changing the schedule to one page on Tuesday, one on Friday, like I do over at Drunk Duck. Would you guys like that better? Or do you like it how it is…?
@Lotte: Alan’s flaws…? We’ve seen temper boil over more than once, he always thinks he’s right, and he seems to have a problem submitting to authority. Oh, and he’s willfully committing treason right now. Huzzah! XD
We’ve seen Alan singing before: back when he rescued Bea, he busted out Yankee Doodle, and over in Issue #2 he’s whistling as he & Bea return to camp.
And yes, that is Yvette climbing through a window. Question is: what will she find?
*sigh* I love this comic so much! These were one of my favorite pages, even though its so sad that Alan is leaving for a while. Poor Bea, I wonder how she feels being in two different realities? It has to be very confusing.
Just wanted to say thanks so much for making this! I found it a couple of months ago, I think from deviantart (The Historic Fashion Lovers?) and I can’t stop reading! I love anything that combines history and romance. History is just so fascinating, especially this era. Are you interested in any other time period in US History?
Hmmm, thats a tough question, Lora. On the one hand, I like getting two pages once a week because it gives me more information than just one page. But the twice a week update sounds very tempting. Honestly, my vote would go toward updating on Tuesday and Friday.
Willing to spill any details on the design of the new site?
Again, love the comic and thanks!
I’m a long time lurker as well as a long time fan. I should comment more and maybe this should be the first but I just have to say this:
Of all the comics I read, none have ever made me cry. These pages did. You should seriously get an award for best emotional piece Lora. And as another person said, if page 15 could be turned into a poster, I would put this on my wall.
BEAUTIFUL PAGE.
And for once, I’m a little torn that Bea has to wake up. =(
I think Yvette will find cookies in Bea’s kitchen before even noticing Bea zonked out on the couch.
Also, I’m with Neph. This whole sequence really lends itself to a movie type thing. I seriously heard him singing in my head as I moved through the pages.
And of course, now she wakes up. ARRRGGHH!!!
By the way, if you think you can update more than once a week, that’d be cool with me, but don’t kill yourself over it.
PREVIEW CAPTIONS!
“Why does Bea have a musket suddenly? And what is that big stick thing?”
“Okay, I need to borrow that dress, seriously.”
“Nice kitty…..don’t hurt me…”
“Crud! I mean….that wasn’t me!
“You put your left foot in, you put your left foot out. You fall off of the window and you shake it all about!”
I personally like getting it all at once, it feels like there’s more to look forward to somehow, and I think comic pages connect to each other better when you can read one after another. BUt I will completely understand if I’m out voted.
Yes, now that I think of it, he did sing before, but singing a softer song that need s to be sung beautifully implies that he can sing WELL.
Which it appears he can because Bea could hardley tear herself away :)
and technically, I suppose sh’e not waking up, she’s falling asleep, just in a different place. Does that make anyone feel better?
Beautiful… I never imagined a comic book like this one. Incredibly catching, and so gorgeously drawn. Love it. As soon as I find some time, I’ll go read the first issues!! I hope I can get them in print too, but in Mexico that sounds quite unlikely…
Personally, I think I like both pages on Friday; gives more to look forward to, and like Brenda said, the pages connect better when you read them at the same time. So that’s my vote! ^___^
*puts on glasses* According to this, it would appear that if Alan Warren were to be transported into the 21st century, that he would then become what you might call a “rock star”…. *takes off glasses* Pssh, those rebellious singers… lol Sorry, couldn’t resist XD
@Lora: I think that the two updates on Fridays gives us faithful readers more to look forward to. :) And personally, I think that you already put so much time and devotion into this comic already, I’d kind of feel bad making demands of you to change your schedule just because it would speed up the instant gratification factor for me. Go with whatever works best for you. :)
And… *facepalms* I forgot all of that! That means that I need to go back and read through the comic again. Oh, the horror of it all, how will I ever bear it? XD And about Alan’s flaws, I think that we might all be too busy fangirling\boying to notice them\care. XD He also strikes me as being the insanely-jealous-boyfriend-type, though. The one who jumps to conclusions and needs to be hit by a truck (or a Washington-propelled rock) before he’ll calm down and actually listen to others.
Or he could be fair and understanding and trusting. I guess it all depends on which side of the bed he wakes up on. =P
Damn it, my hopes for an awkward “can you help me remove this thing (ie stays)?” scene are dashed.
However, lovely to hear Alan singing. Or rather, to see him singing. Especially the lyrics that no one ever hears.
And I’m up for the two pages Friday, it gives me more to live on for the rest of the week…and it heightens the suspense…
In regards to update more than once a week thing:
Ummmm, sorry :-).
I like getting two pages on Friday.
I just get a little narky and obsess over the things that I find completely amazing and groundbreaking and inspiring and beautiful.
I’m proud of you… thank you for creating something that makes me so passionate.
xx
Honestly, I prefer it the same way. Two pages on Friday updates. Dreamer Friday! :D
Lovely scene, though I’m surprised he knows the song. It wasn’t published in any hymnal until ’79 :P
I suppose it spread from England before that. We’ll go with that story. ;)
I am so addicted to this comic! I adore the art, the history, the amazing men.
And I say keep the two pages together, the comic is better in bigger bites.
Well yes Alan does have his moments… but don’t we all. He’s well passionate and spirited, which I have to say is way better than wishy washy and or crude… which seems to be a trend among guys nowadays. But I also must admit I’m with Neph I think Nathan’s more my type… but I don’t know I would be very torn between the two if I had to pick one.
And I totally forgot about the singing before… wow I thought I was more up to speed on this comic than I am.
But about splitting the update to one page two days a week:
I must say I’m not in favour of this notion. Many times, I find myself with other comics frustrated with only one page. I would rather it update once a week and get more at once than smaller tid bits. I totally understand not being able to do more than 2 pages a week. I’m at art school right now and my roommate is in sequential art (fancier name for comics) and she’s now running two webcomics on top of her school work. I don’t know how she does it but I definitely know that these things take way longer than anyone can really comprehend unless you’ve done it yourself. I appreciate all the work that goes into these pages and I want to let you know that I’m a big fan. <3
Thanks for all your hard work and dedication.
@Neph… OMG I feel the same. Wow I like so want to like chat with you since we seem to think similarly…. lol. Anyway I’m torn because I soo want to go back right now and re-read the entire comic making myself feel better and more up to speed on everything that has happened. But I’m currently slaving away on an 2D animated short film… which is pretty much death. But anyway yes. You seem like a fun person and I enjoy your comments.
@Lora I’m totally going to have to make some fan art… I’ve been wanting to for a while but school keeps getting in the way. :P So in just a little more than a week I will be free… free to do some much desired fan art for you so watch out!
I haven’t been commenting, because I can’t without crying.
These past few pages are similar to something that I know of, and the connection’s quite overwhelming. ^^; I must say, though– Bea looks AMAZING in the last panel of page…15? Yeah. Absolutely gorgeous. Good job. <3
And…there goes Yvette. Secret…AGENT GIRL! X’D
Thanks for your opinions on the update schedule everyone!! I’ll keep your comments in mind, and maybe do a formal poll over at DeviantART, if you’re a member there.
loved these pages……beautifully done….and a great transition…
I like getting two pages every Friday. It helps with continuity.
=)
one – did anyone else feel their stomach flip when they saw the image of Alan taking hold of Bea’s hand? because mine did, SEVERAL times over and over and over again.
two – the image of them side by side, divided between the door – was by far, my favorite image yet. The lighting in it, and for me, how it symbolically represented their relationship of this tangible dream – breathtakingly gorgeous.
three – you WOULD end it there, wouldn’t you? aggghhh, i love it either way.
Thank you so much for all the time and effort you put into this Lora. I know it truly makes my week of cursing and staying up far too late working on school assignments, term papers, and design projects worth it just to see your two beautifully plotted and illustrated pages. And I had no idea that you didn’t get any money from the publication of your works – you can guarantee me as a frequent donator now!
Lora, the new pages are just breathtaking! The scene of Alan taking Bea’s handle and leading her through the crowd gave my heart a flutter, I admit. The coloring was great, and the scene of them back to back while he sang Amazing Grace was just lovely. Beautiful job. I’ve been following your comic since Issue 1, and even now you’re comic is the one I look forward to reading each week! :)
page 15 is so lovely!
found a nice historical comic i thought you would like, lora. actually, i think you MUST check it out! http://lutherlevy.com/
i hate to be a stickler…but wasn’t “amazing grace” published in 1779 and the abandoning of long island was in 1776?
not that i care. i freaking love this comic, and these pages were particularly brilliant. keep up the good work! high five from a fellow history buff!
Well, as a few of you pointed out, that Amazing Grace wasn’t published until 1779, that doesn’t mean that it can’t spread orally like many stories have been passed down long before this time. I can easily see that being the case, what with no computers/TVs etc to spread information, oral communication is probably one of the faster methods…. other than, like, tying a note to a bird or something (because everyone loves to tie songs to a bird) lol Sorry, couldn’t resist =P
Great. Now all I can think about is dreamy Ioan Gruffudd. :) It must be said: Brava! It’s gorgeous stuff.
How DO you get one of those corsets off on your own?
