New Pages- 5 & 6!

New Pages 5 & 6 this week!  Nathan is back… briefly at least.  :)

stop_sulking

(Colonel Knowlton, always ready to mentor his men.)

Did you all get your printed copies of Issue #3 yet?  And don’t forget to pre-order Issue #5!  Diamond order code #JAN094325.  Or order online at Heavy Ink or TFAW (overseas).

I think I’ve mentioned before that my color assistant, Michael Motter, does not get my scripts when he gets the pages.  Not because I’m mean, it would just be added hassle for me.  But I think he’s come to prefer it that way because he creates his own dialogue for each page while working on it.  Earlier this week, I found this in my email from him:

woe-is-me

(It was too good to keep to myself!)

VOTE this week to read the original first six pages of the Issue #6 script.  Enjoy!  I think the briefer version that I wound up using is far superior, but there is some cuteness in the original that was eliminated.  Special thanks to my writer pal Michelle for having the guts to say, “Uh, Lora… this intro isn’t working…” and helping me revise Issue #6 to make it so much better!  So VOTE!

(Oh, and I know that Buzz Comix isn’t working… when their site is up and running again, I’ll update the incentive.)

Hee hee! I Love how the pep talk with Alan is sensetive and indepth and the the pep talk with Nathan amounts to: smack! “Snap out of it.”
and yet it seems to work spectacularly.
I think the very first panel of page five is one of the most beutiful pages you’ve done yet. All I could do was stop and stare at it for a few minutes.

  2. Lotte says:

OMG… I love this comic a little too much. My roommate and friend just gave me a late birthday gift yesterday and it was the first two issues of the comic. I totally flipped and I have yet to open them because they are just so pretty and well I’ve been busy. She didn’t expect me to be quite that excited about receiving the comic in print. So yeah for the update. I really do have to say I appreciate that you’re consistent with your updates. I’m just wondering how Bea’s going to wake up this time and how that translates between the time difference. Looking forward to the next update and re-reading my shiny new comics. I must admit these are the first comics I have ever owned…

Thanks so much for all your hard and amazing work!!

  3. Natalie says:

Poor Nathan, he looks so full of angst. I think he just wants an offical pairing, I’m sure lots of girls (and guys) throughout the last few centuries who would love him.

Got my issue three in the mail, it was even the alternate cover!

  4. deb says:

Whoa. I think I stopped breathing for a while when I read the sixth page.

  5. Abigail says:

I agree with Colonel Knowlton that Nathan should stop sulking. By the way, I googled Nathan and found that your Nathan looks a lot like the statues of him. I would say that your Nathan is cute, but I have a thing for the Marquis de Lafayette. He was really hot at nineteen, especially in his dragoon’s uniform.
I like how Nathan is this really virtuous, sociable young gentleman while also being a little eccentric. It makes him a very appealing character.

  6. Abigail says:

I should have included this before: I LOVE THE DREAMER AND I THINK THAT YOUR ARTWORK IS AWESOME!

  7. Hannah17 says:

Oooohhh!!! The excitement is building…..I love the Battle of Long Island!!! All the fog and leaving the fires burning and yet another night march!!!! So dramatic!!! I love how Knowlton just slaps Nathan on the head! So funny.I love Fridays….

  8. Ellira says:

Uh oh, sounds dodgy to me. Grovesnor is cute though, all curled up on the floor like that. ^^

Much as I don’t like to say it, Nathan must be a lot more grown-up than Alan if all he needs is a smack round the head to bring him to his senses.

Comic 3 is winging its way over the Atlantic! Hurray!

  9. Albone says:

Pffft, yah I got my issue 3′s. They’re amazing looking in print.

We’re getting something a little different from the norm, intrigue. Info that outranks the Colonel? Sounds like some sneaky shenanigans at foot which is making me eager to see what’s next.

Motterhorn is on the money. XD LOL

  10. Lora says:

Lotte, I’m glad you’re a proud new comic owner for the first time! Ah… I remember that feeling. I never wanted to wrinkle it, while simultaneously wanting to read it a thousand times. The latter impulse won out, and it’s all wrinkled and well loved but… it’s as it should be. :)

Hey, Abigail! There are no surviving portraits of Nathan (except possibly a profile with not much detail carved into a door, ha ha) so I based my Nathan off of my favorite Nathan Hale statue, the one outside City Hall in New York City.

Who knows what he really looked like….! Though there are some good written accounts of his appearance.

  11. Seanan says:

Knowlton totally just pulled a Gibbs slap! Nice.

  12. Seanan says:

Oh, and your art keeps getting better and better!

  13. Kira says:

Does that Nathan have the birthmark on him, too?

  14. Lora says:

Yeah, the birthmark (mole) is on his neck. You can see it pretty good in the panels after he’s been slapped.

  15. msnovtue says:

Ha! I’m not the only person to think it! I admit, Knowlton reminded me of Gibbs from NCIS long before this, but the headslap just seals the deal. :D

That said, while Nathan is pretty, and pretty yummy, I am seriously jonesing on the good Colonel…..

  16. Kimberley! says:

hahahaha I just LOVE Michael’s caption! You should post more of those :) And I REALLY liked the first panel of page 5

  17. Abigail says:

Question: Is Alan younger or older than Nathan, or are they the same age?
In respect to the fight they had, it seems like Nathan and Alan have the same principles, but Nathan is more reserved.

  18. Ossian says:

    Discovered you today.
Fell in love with your neat linearts and beautiful colouring.
Promptly added to fav, great work ^_*

  19. Brent says:

I love that pep talk….this is why I’m on Team Knowlton. Good to see Bea again too, if only briefly…and that alternate rendition of Michael’s is fabulous! Can we make that a weekly feature?

So, sneaky goings on…..this is definitely gonna curtail Knowlton’s plans for Bea, I’m thinking.

  20. Colleen says:

Ahaha, yay for NCIS lovers! That was definitely a Gibbs slap! Makes me love Knowlton even more, if that was possible. And adorable sleeping Freddy just made my day :)

And ooooh, intrigue. I like how the messengers kinda creep out of the fog. Very mysterious. You always have a great sense of pacing. Can’t wait for next Friday now!

  21. Natalie says:

Hi Abigail! Alan is older than Nathan, he’s somewhere in his mid to late twenties (Alan you cradle robber), Nathan turned twenty-one on June sixth of 1776. This recent year Nathan turned 253, we had cake.

  22. Diana says:

We had lots of fun as well as cake. This year I think we should have a dance, I imagine Nathan liked dancing, as he liked girls (I am not making that last part up!).

I am enjoying the fog, and the mystery. And kudos to Lora for being the only person in written history (except for that guy at Yale who wrote him a tetchy letter) to portray Nathan’s flaws (imagined, in this case, but still, they’re flaws). Very refreshing.

I’m in a mood to spout Nathan trivia, and I sense interest in what he looked like, so here goes:
He was about six feet, athletic build, blue eyed, and had a clear, piercing voice (this discription was a written down by someone who knew his former students, so I don’t know that he was clear and piercing all the time…). His hair was discribed as “flaxen”, which now means light blond but in the 18th C probably meant the actual color of flax, which would be a dirty golden brown. So, his hair color was somewhere between blond and light brown. He wore it “short”, which actually meant about shoulder length and tied back, possibly with some pieces hanging down in front (so Lora has it exactly right…not a coincidence I’m sure).
He was described as being unusually handsome and having “even” facial features. His silhouette (as Lora mentioned, this is the only portrait of him, and it’s carved on the back of a door in his family’s house), shows that he had a slightly long nose, which seems to have been true of all the Hales. Apparently this was no impediment to his handsomeness as everyone who described him said he was good-looking and very popular with girls!

Some things never change, apparently. Nor should they.

  23. Emily says:

I loved this post And the dubbing by your colorist was pretty awesome too. :) I agree with Natalie, there should be a pairing! coughcoughmecoughcough

  24. Ginny-gin-gin says:

I was for sure that the messenger was going to have some terrible news! (Well, I guess that a night march isn’t good news, but it’s definitely better than my over-active imagination.)

The script for the pages is definitely interesting although I was hoping it was going to address why it’s”not as simple as that” to just marry Bea. That got me to thinking: is Alan betrothed? Or maybe Bea? Oh no! Is someone MARRIED? Eeep!

  25. Lora says:

Ha ha, Ginny, those are good guesses! There definitely is more to that statement of Alan’s… but I’m not telling. ;)

  26. Stephanie says:

I’m so addicted!!! I love this webcomic/comic! I absolutely love it! I swear if i have the money I’d donate, but sadly I’m in college, not to mention I’m getting married in November, so I must save my money. Hopefully I’ll have some to donate soon! I love this comic!!!!!

  27. Emily says:

Me again! :) Methinks that “it’s not as simple as that” is because Bea’s dad does not approve and that he think that Yankees are full of fail. And Diana, I read that Nathan also had a “deep, musical voice”, which from my reading of many regency romance novels, means that he had a really hot voice. So, I guess it means that he had a clear piercing, deep and musical voice. :)

  28. Abigail says:

Emily, where you read about Nathan’s voice, did they say whether he was a tenor or base? I’ve been trying to figure it out based on your description, and it sounds like he was a base.

  29. Emily says:

I got it from M. William Phelps’ book about him. It’s actually pretty good, and it’s a pretty good starter book for those who want to know about him. I have yet to get Seymor’s book though-do you know where to get them? Anyway, it’s on pg. 27, and the description comes from an acquaintance of Hale’s by the name of Dr. Eneas Munsun.

  30. Natalie says:

Most of the staff at Hale homestead don’t hold the Phelps book very highly, but that’s a matter of opinion. I’d check amazon for Seymour’s it was reprinted recently but it’s still over thirty dollars used.

  31. Diana says:

So Nathan had a deep, clear, piercing, musical, voice- in other words the voice of a good orator, which by all accounts he was. An enjoyable voice to listen to aka a hot voice. But I think we’d be coming to that conclusion no matter the evidence…

I’m also assuming he had a Connecticut accent.

Which makes me think…does Alan have a Mass accent? And does Bea sound like an upper-class Bostonian in her 18th-century guise? Because that would be SWEET.
